New data suggests workplace culture, rather than industry, could play an important role in how physically active employees are.
Consumer services employees are the most active among the sectors analysed, while health, wellness and fitness employees come in last, according to findings from workplace fitness platform GoJoe.
Compiled from data across more than 650 employers, the research ranks industries according to the average number of activities completed per person each month.
Consumer services employees recorded an average of 28.3 activities per person per month, followed by investment management at 27.3, newspapers at 26.3 and legal services and practice at 26.1.
Restaurants and hospitality completed the top five with 25.8 activities per person per month.
Entertainment and higher education both recorded an average of 25.7 activities, while gambling and casinos came in at 25.4.
Perhaps surprisingly, finance-related sectors also featured prominently. Investment management ranked second overall, while insurance and banking both made the top ten.
At the other end of the table, health, wellness and fitness recorded the lowest activity level of the 15 sectors included, at an average of 23.8 activities per person per month.
Is workplace culture driving physical activity?
Will Turner, CEO and Co-Founder of GoJoe, said: “What surprises me most is that the health and wellness industry doesn’t lead the table.
“The most active workers tend to be in fast-paced, competitive sectors where a culture of high performance exists and exercise is woven into that ethos.
“It’s not about the job. It’s about the environment and the people around you.”
The findings raise questions about the role workplace culture can play in encouraging employees to be more physically active.
Turner added: “The link between an active workforce and lower absenteeism is well established. What this data shows is that culture, not industry, is the real driver. The sectors topping this table aren’t doing it by accident.”
